A Tale of Two Tournaments
by Subhash
It was the wettest of times, it was the driest of times, we had the rain in
Vancouver, we had the sun in LA, we struggled in some games, we dominated in
others, there were teams who played with good spirit, there were teams who
were full of whiners, we had plenty of subs, we had no subs - in short, the
two weekends of hockey were full of so many experiences and extremes th
at
the team members will always describe their memories, for good or
for bad, in the superlative degree of comparison only....(with apologies to
Charles Dickens...;-) )

In both tournaments, we started slow and also met up early with the stronger
teams in our pools - so that was somewhat rough going. But in both
tournaments, we got stronger as we gelled together, and we also ended with
the weaker teams in our pools and in the playoffs - so we did better in our
later matches. We ended up with rather similar records in both tournaments.

At VIT, we had 2 wins/ 2 losses/ 1 draw, although we did win a
"friendly" penalty stroke shootout after the draw - so you can count that as
a win, even though it doesn't count in the standings. In the pool games, I
think we scored 3 goals and had 5-6 goals scored against us overall,
although my memory is a little fuzzy on the numbers. I also can't remember
the final score of the playoff game - I think it ended in a 2-2 draw in
regulation, and we then won in a not-so-friendly penalty stroke shootout.

At Cap Cup, we had 2 wins/ 3 losses, although one of the losses was a game
that we dominated and really felt we should have had at least a draw if not
an outright win...missed some decent goal chances on our side and allowed a
late, sloppy goal against the run of play. Including the playoff game, we
scored 6 goals and had 8 goals scored against us overall. We lost by only
1-0 in our pool game to the team that was the eventual champion!

All in all, a good time was had by all of us, and hopefully everyone was
satisfied with their playing time and playing opportunities, including the
many regular and irregular non-Portland players who played with us in both
tournaments. A big THANK YOU to Courtney for putting in the time and the
effort and pulling together two tournaments in a row!
